Exclusive Interview: Cassi Thomson (Big Love)

Cassi Thomson is having a big year. The 17 year-old actress, singer, and songwriter just finished filming the final season of the popular HBO series Big Love, and is working on her first album. She also has a Hallmark Television movie coming out this summer called Rock the House (2011), where she stars opposite Jack Coleman as his daughter. We recently had the chance to speak with Cassi about her experence on BiG Love, the slow but steady progress of her very first album, and the special friendship she shares with a certain Twilight star.

You just finished filming the last season of the popular HBO series Big Love. Tell us what that experience was like.

It's been unbelievable. I just felt so blessed walking on the set every day. You know, every show you work on doesn't have the caliber of people HBO's Big Love does. The writers, the cast, the crew, everybody was just so incredible.

Many of the actors on the show, your cast mates, are film stars.

Yeah, all of The Them, really. Bill Paxton is a huge movie star, and they all did a TV show, so it was really cool to work with big film actors on a TV show. I learned so much. Experience is really the best teacher in acting, and I got a lot of experience on that set.

Did the subject matter of the show chanGe Your perspective on life or relationships in any way?

Yes, definitely, because I did a lot of research for the role, so I kind of saw a different way of life. I learned a lot about polygamy that I had never known or seen before. It was definitely challenging, but also an educating role.

What do you think was the best thing you took away from the experience of playing your character Cara Lynn?

It opened my eyes to a whole different religion and a whole different way of life. I think polygamy is really overlooked, or was really overlooked before Big Love, and I just think it's really cool that we brought attention to a subject like that. What I also love about the show is that it's not biased by any means. They're not trying to convince you one way or another of your beliefs or their beliefs. It's just a show about a modern polygamist family.

You have a Hallmark movie coming out called Rock the House (2011) which costars Jack Coleman. Tell us about your role in the movie, and when we can expect to see it.

I play Karen Peterson and my dad, played by Jack Coleman is a lawyer, so he's always busy at work. He's never home, we used to be very very close when she was younger, but in the past few years he's gotten so busy with work that he's always blowing her off and letting her down. She's sick of it, he's trying to make amends and she's about to go off to this different school. So it's a story about a father trying to get in touch with his daughter again. It's supposed to air around June 11th, right around Father's Day.

In addition to being an actress you are also a singer and a songwriter. You have some songs on iTunes presently, and you're working on your first album.

Yes I am. It's kind of a slow thing that's happening because when my acting is going good, which it is right now, I honestly don't have time to work on my songs. So it's a very slow process, but surely one day I will have a completed album.

On behalf of girls all over America, I have to ask you about Taylor Lautner. Taylor appeared in your music video for the song "Caught Up in You." How did that come about and what was it like making the video?

{Laughs}. Well you know, Taylor has been one of my really close friends for a long time. He wasn't working at all, so I asked him if he wanted to be in this video with me and he said "of course." Right before we shot the video, he found out that he had booked this role in Twilight. He still wanted to do the video because he said he would, so we shot it. I was really really excited for him, but he had no idea, and I had no idea of what his future was going to be. Absolutely unbelievable!

After watching the video it looks like you two were genuinely having fun, and I got the sense that you must have known each other beforehand. That seems to come across on camera.

Yeah, I've known him since I was like 11 or 12 years old, so I've known him for very long time. He is honestly one of the most genuine people I've ever met. He's really a great guy.

And who could have imagined how that film and his career was going to take off?

It's unbelievable but it's great. He deserves everything he gets.

Given the choice would you rather win a Grammy or and Emmy?

I'd rather win an Emmy. My acting is my main focus, so to get awarded for that would probably be more...... rewarding {laughs}.

I understand that you're a football fan, specifically an Indianapolis Colts fan.

Yes! I am a huge Indianapolis Colts fan. I love them, I love them, I love them! Austin Collie has to be my favorite football player in the world because he's so good looking {laughs}.

I've got a two-part question for you – what fires you up, gets you motivated?

Just wanting to be the best. I'm very very competitive and I always have been, so this just transfers over to my acting. I see everything as the opposition and as a challenge, and that's how I motivate myself.

And what do you do to chill out?

I love massages, so I get massages quite a bit. I think they're the most relaxing thing you can do. I also hang out with friends, go to movies, stuff like that. That's my relaxation.

Do you have a celebrity crush?

I do, kind of. I've always had a huge thing for Brad Pitt, and I know he's so much older than me, but I think he's so talented and so good-looking.

What is the one thing that you couldn't live without right now?

The Materialistic stuff I guess would be my car. I absolutely love my car. But the more emotional side of it is my dog Tucker. He's my favorite thing in the whole world. He's a yellow Labrador.

What would you like to say to your fans out there?

Oh my gosh, just thank you for everything!

Without their support I wouldn't be anywhere.Original post
